Jose R. Lucero was elected clerk of Doña Ana County in 1896, succeeding Pat Garrett as sheriff through election in 1900. He served five nonconsecutive terms as sheriff serving from 1901-1904, 1909-1912, 1917-1920, 1925-1928, and 1935-1936. Jose and his brother Felipe Lucero were County sheriffs for all but two terms until 1936.
